Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) on Friday seized substandard mattresses worth Shs500m at Sekaziga House, a mall in downtown Kampala.

UNBS officials began the search alongside police Friday morning only to find hundreds of substandard mattresses awaiting sellers and others in a factory-like structure at the mall’s rooftop.

“We were tipped off that they are stored here and distributed all over the country,” Mr Godwin Muhwezi, UNBS spokesperson said.

“We have confiscated about 5,000 mattresses, worth Shs500m and that means 5,000 consumers saved from consumption of substandard mattresses.”

The mattresses were seized from Sekaziga House which is located on Channel Street, in the city centre.

Majority of the substandard mattresses, according to UNBS, were not well labelled.

The bureau went on to warn mattresses buyers to look out for a number of hints to confirm that they are of the right quality.

Among these, they say, a mattress needs to be clearly labelled with the name and address of the manufacturer, its dimensions, class and grade of the foam.

The mattress also had to be clean and free from defects including splits, tears that may compromise its performance.

It must also be devoid of a hard skin on either side and should also be free from odour.
