Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine was Tuesday given an international humanitarian award at the 2019 Peace and Human Rights Summit in Chicago, USA.

Bobi Wine regarded the Award as a sign that the world has heard what he termed as ‘cries for freedom’ in Uganda.

“Last night[Tuesday], I was very honoured to receive this year’s International Humanitarian Award from Rev. Jesse Jackson, a champion of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States of America,” said Bobi Wine in a statement.

“I am grateful to the Coalition he leads for this recognition, which only confirms to us that our cries for freedom are reaching the ears of the world. I dedicate this award to the men, women and children of Uganda who have paid the ultimate price in our struggles for democracy,” he added.

His Mityana Municipality counterpart MP Zaake Francis Butebi who congratulated him with “pride and gratitude” said the award was handed to him by Martin Luther King Jr’s associate Rev. Jesse Jackson.

“Comrade Kyagulanyi is a true symbol of peace and human rights that he has exhibited in this time he has been engaged in active leadership and politics,” Zaake said.

“Together with us in People Power, Kyagulanyi is advocating for a change of government using the most peaceful means we have ever seen – no violence.”

According to Zaake, even when the current government oppresses and violates all their rights including privacy, freedom of speech and freedom from torture, Bobi Wine has not been tempted to return violence.

“He is a true embodiment of Martin Luther King Jr of the modern times. I hope this award strengthens his spirit in this journey of redemption of our country from those taking it hostage.”

He added: “May he be re-energised to fight this dictatorship more and return power to the people because at the end of it all, we expect to wear that crown as a nation.”

He went on: “Let us pray for him and People Power to be guided by the Lord in every step we make.”

Zaake encouraged Ugandans to embrace Bobi Wine because everything shows that he is fighting not for himself but for the redemption “of us all”.

“Above all, let us all get National IDs and be ready for 2021.”
