Orlando Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic has resigned! The news come as a shock despite results having not gone the club’s way in their last two outings – an encounter in the CAF Champions League and another in the Absa Premiership.
“The Club would like to place on record that this decision was taken unilaterally, and it was the management’s decision to accept Mr. Sredojevic to vacate his position based on reasons he has presented which are of a personal nature,” Orlando Pirates said in a statement.
The club’s technical team led by Rhulani Mokwena assumes the coaching responsibilities, the statement said.
Sredojevic has recently been linked with the coaching job at Zamalek having made the shortlist, according reports. But the Egyptian giants two days ago appointed Aleksandar Stanojević, who is the now former Bucs coach’s Serbian compatriot.
It will become clearer in the coming days what exactly were the “personal reasons” that led to him abruptly quitting his position as Pirates head coach when he still had this current season remaining on his contract.
Micho had returned to Orlando Pirates in 2017 after an earlier spell there.
During that time, Micho took Pirates to the 2006 CAF Champions League semi-finals, but indifferent domestic form cost him his job.
Micho came to Africa in 2011 and coached clubs in Uganda, Ethiopia, South Africa, Tanzania and Sudan and the national teams of Rwanda and Uganda.
He ended a successful spell as coach of Uganda in July 2017 after leading them to the Africa Cup of Nations, having failed to secure $64,000 (54,000 euros) in unpaid salaries.
