A police officer in Sironko on Sunday shot dead a man for allegedly resisting arrest.
Matayo Wodeyo, 23, a resident of Kisali village, Busita parish Busita sub-county in Sironko district was shot on Saturday by Moses Kirunda a police officer attached to Busulani police station.
It is alleged that Wodeyo defiled a minor in Kabong district and fled to Sironko, where Joseph Edukat a police officer attached to Kabong central police station found him hiding.
According to the Kisali village chairperson, Moses Namisi, the officers who had gone to arrest the suspect reported to his office that they had come to arrest a defilement suspect. He said that he accompanied the officers to the Wodeyo’s home.
Namisi says that the suspect emerged out of the house with a panga with an intention to cut the police officers, prompting Kirunda to shoot at him. John Robert Tukei, the Elgon Region police spokesperson said that Wodeyo died while he was being rushed to Budadiri health centre IV.
He said the matter is under investigation under reference number SD04/12/10/2019 and the police officer has been arrested is detained at Busulani police station.
Last year, a police officer attached to Sironko central police station was arrested for allegedly shooting dead a chapati seller after he also resisted arrest.
