Atleast Twelve people have been confirmed dead and others left with severe wounds in an accident at Walumbe junction, Buwenge town council along the Jinja – Kamuli highway.
A TATA brand truck registration number UAK 344V transporting sugarcane failed to brake while on the steep hill causing it to roll backwards and then eventually, overturning.
Reports indicate that while residents around together with police were trying to push the truck away from the road, another one ferrying sugarcane, registration number UAK 996Z rammed into them.
Moses Batwala, a former district councillor who rescued some of the victims said that he counted 10 bodies that were taken to Buwenge health centre IV mortuary.
“Our efforts now are on taking the badly injured to Jinja referral hospital. The dead are at the mortuary,” he said.
Henry Mugarura, the Kiira North Division Police Commander confirmed the accident.
He said that they are yet to establish the exact number of fatalities.
