Police in Ntungamo District are investigating a case under which a 19-year-old Senior Four candidate was gang-raped and later died.
The girl allegedly escaped from school with other students for an outing in Kitwe Town on Sunday evening but was found unconscious in the school playground on Monday morning.
She was taken to Kitwe Health Centre IV where she died hours after arrival.
The late was a student of Kitwe Secondary School and a resident of Kitogosi village, Nyakabaare Ward in Kitwe Town Council.
Five suspects, including two male students of the same school, have been arrested.
Mr Oward Ruhesi, the school headmaster, said that the girl went out with two other students and left their colleagues revising their notes at night, causing anxiety among other students and teachers. The two students later returned but without her.
“Because she was doing her papers, when she was not found revising with others, it caused anxiety in the school. She had escaped with others from school. They later returned. She was one of the most humble students we had in the school. I can’t tell how this happened. We discovered her in the morning at the playground and took her to hospital but she could not make it,” Mr Ruhesi said.
The girl becomes the second Senior Four student in Ntungamo to die during exams following the death of one Ambrose Niwandinda of St John Vocational Secondary School Kishariro. Niwandinda died after a short illness at school on October 19.
