Police in Kireka on Thursday impounded a Ministry of Health van for violating the emergency health guidelines specifically social distancing after it was found carrying over 25 medical personnel.
Addressing journalists at Uganda Media Center on Thursday afternoon, the Internal Affairs State Minister, Mario Obiga Kania, said all vehicles that defy the presidential directives should be impounded and drivers be punished.
Vehicles were banned from roads after earlier restrictions were ignored requiring cars to only carry three passengers as some people were using their vehicles to transport others and increasing the risk of spreading the virus.
President Museveni during his address on Wednesday night apologised to all the medical workers that were stopped on their way by LDUs before they had got stickers to allow them free movement to and from their duty stations.
He also touched on the issue of protection of health workers in the line of duty.
“We are going to discuss with the health hierarchy on how to better protect heath workers. As ministry of health, we should have standard protection of people [medical personnel] – epidemic or no epidemic,” says the President.
