Government and NRM spokesperson has told off critics of the recent constitutional amendment removing age-limits that President Yoweri Museveni could rule until 2030, if he is in good health.
“There is nothing that will bar the president from ruling beyond 2030 if he is in good health. He is a reliable captain of Uganda as a ship and we as NRM believe he will take this country to where it needs to go,” Opondo told this newspaper.
Scoffing at the new campaign by the opposition led by Kizza Besigye, dubbed ‘Tubalemese’ (‘let us make it difficult for them’) and which is designed to cripple the NRM government’s capacity to govern, Opondo said they are used to “Besigye’s comedy.”
“This is not the first time Besigye is coming up with something to make him relevant. Tubalemese is just that,” Opondo added.
The amendment of the constitution to remove age-limits gives President Yoweri Museveni the greenlight to govern for as long as Ugandans continue to vote for him, something Opondo says is guaranteed.
“We are not talking about a lame duck president,we are talking about a man who transformed Uganda from the doldrums to the path of middle income status. That is why he always wins elections” Opondo explains.
