The rampant social media crimes show no sign of stopping if the arrest of Geoffrey Kalele who impersonated the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and extorted at least Uganda Shillings. Using advanced technology, Police hunted him down and found out that he was a resident of Namutumba District.
In a cautious statement issued on the Kampala Metropolitan social media page, Police stated the following:
“Geoffrey Kalele a resident of Namutumba District has been arrested for allegedly operating a Facebook account in the names of the IGP.
The CID spokeman, Vincent Ssekate said that Kalele opened up a facebook account in the names Martin Okoth Ochola between March and June and has been using it to defraud the public.
Kalele also has been using the fake account to give orders to officers and some unsuspecting officers would follow them.
After his arrest, Kalele accepted his crime and confessed to coning and defrauding people.
He had so far collected UgX 700,000/- from the public which he used it to pay school fees for his children.”
While addressing Members of Parliament (MPs) about the rising insecurity and crimes in Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni revealed that government is in advanced stages of obtaining equipment that would trace criminals on social media.
