Emmanuel Okwi opened the scores in 29th minute and Fahad Bayo sealed it with a second goal in the 66th minute to propel Uganda Cranes on top of the group in the 2021 Afcon qualifier against Malawi at Mandela National Stadium Sunday evening.
The Northern Irishman Jonathan McKinstry did not disappoint the eagerly waiting fans after all as this was his home debut since being appointed Cranes coach at the end of September.
The victory sees Uganda move onto four points from two games, level with Burkina Faso who also beat South Sudan on the same day.
For Malawi who started the day top of Group B, they drop into third spot with three points.
Following the Cranes’ win against Malawi several high profile Ugandans have been pouring out their hearts as they congratulate the national soccer team for the great job.
Among those who hailed Uganda Cranes was former Presidential contender and ex-prime minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, who tweeted thus; “Congratulations Uganda Cranes for the well deserved victory. With hard work and consistency, AFRICA Cup is in our reach.”
