As was widely expected, Captain Francis Babu has stood down from contesting against staunch archrival Al Hajji Moses Kigongo, for the position of Vice Chairperson National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Babu who had heavily campaigned against the veteran Kigongo abandoned the race after he was “talked out of it” by President Museveni.

President Museveni made an earnest plea for Kigongo who has occupied that position since the NRM took over in 1986. Museveni emphasized the need for members of the party to sort out the issues at hand first before focusing on who should be in a given position.

“Don’t start with the who, start with the what, then you will get the who. For me, I need all of you. Everybody is very important, so concentrate on the what,” Museveni told his party members

In response, Captain Francis Babu said that he had decided to put the party’s interest above self.

“After talking for a long time for the good of our party, we have agreed. I will voluntarily step down and let the other contestant continue. My decision has been done in very good faith and I accept it,” Captain Babu said.
