Bobi Wine and Besigye in Rukungiri

Veteran Opposition politician and former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president and presidential candidate Kizza Besigye has anointed Kyadondo East Member of Parliament (MP) Kyagulanyi Sentamu also known as Bobi Wine to take over as opposition leader when he (Besigye) retires.

Besigye told his aides as he embarked on campaigning for the FDC candidate in Rukungiri, that “soon it will be time for the youth to take over. There is no charismatic leader at the moment to galvanize the youth, like Bobi Wine does.”

The remarks are likely to ruffle feathers considering that it is not the first time Besigye is making them. When campaigning for Paul Mwiru in the Jinja East By-Election, Besigye made the same remarks.

It is noteworthy that Erias Lukwago has also been eyeing the same ‘position.’ His close association with Besigye was seen to be positioning himself for the day he would take over.

Speaking of their relationship, Bobi Wine who descended on Rukungiri to lend support to Muzanira Betty posted on his social media page:

“Until early last year, I used to visit Dr. Besigye and over time encourage him to fight for us. On
one of the visits, Doctor reminded me that there’s no one who will fight for us but ourselves. It’s therefore on the same grounds that I urge all our people of Rukungiri to stand for what is just and right. The fire that burns within us is more than that which we go through and the issues that hurt us are irrespective of age, religion, sex and neither tribe.
Ms. Muzanira Betty stands for justice and therefore deserves our support without any further reservations. A great round of Applause to my other colleagues that travelled from wherever to come and support our sister today as she was nominated in Rukungiri and continue to call upon everyone that the quest for freedom is everyone’s role and obligation as citizens.”

The Rukungiri race is a tough one for FDC as NRM’s Winnie Matsiko has rallied thousands of voters with the blessing of President Yoweri Museveni.
