Former presidential candidate on the FDC ticket Col (Rtd) Dr Kizza Besigye has been charged with murder, assaulting police officers on duty, malicious damage of property and inciting of violence in Rukungiri on Wednesday.
Police says Besigye is responsible for the death of one Nasasira who was hit with a brick to death and six hospitalised people. This was during the scuffle between police and locals at a political rally held in Rukungiri Stadium.
“He committed criminal acts in Rukungiri, that’s why we have arrested him. He is on wanted,” says Denis Namuwoza the Kigezi Police regional commander. Police adds that on the command of Besigye, angry locals threw stones at police officers and ended up injuring some locals. Besigye was to attend a political rally in Rukungiri having been invited by the municipality leader. His presence attracted thousands of people to consult about the age limit amendment bill.
Police intervened and sealed off the entrance to the stadium which sparked off anger in the locals who started throwing stones at police. Besigye was arrested and taken to Rukungiri police station last night together with his travel mates including Ingrid Turinawe, Elias Lukwago and Roland Kiginda. They are still under detention.
