Veteran opposition politician Kizza Besigye has said he will not accept the decision of parliament to amend the constitution and remove age-limits.

The former FDC presidential candidate told journalists that he could not watch while Uganda’s future is destroyed by President Yoweri Museveni who he called dictator.

“We all know that the constitution has been amended for his own benefit. It has nothing to do with Uganda, so I am ready to mobilize all Ugandans to demonstrate against this constitutional coup,” Besigye said.

Parliament recently voted to amend the constitution and remove age-limit for those seeking to stand for the office of the president. It also voted to extend the term of parliament and by default the presidency to seven years, while restoring term limits.

Kizza Besigye has stood against President Yoweri Museveni four times and lost. His best bet was 2021 where he anticipated that Museveni would not stand. In the long week world of politics, Besigye has to find all ways of remaining relevant until 2023 when the next elections shall be held.

When asked why he does not give way to others if indeed he is a democrat, Besigye said that his time will come to hand over but currently he is struggling against dictatorship.

New political forces are on the rise with Bobi Wine seemingly poised to be a political force to reckon with over the next few years.
