As the war of words continues between the mainstream church and National Resistance Movement (NRM) spokesperson Ofwono Opondo, Opondo has responded to attacks he has received from faithful over his recent utterances on the church.

Opondo who doubles as the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, the official government agency for information, now says the mainstream church is poor, depends on handouts because it has failed to adapt to changes that require smart management of resources for success.

“The church depends on handouts instead of progressively devising ways of financial empowerment through business development projects. When they castigate MPs for understanding Uganda’s needs and amending the constitution to lead us to further prosperity, they should know that their lack of dynamism is what has led them to depend on handouts for over a century,” Opondo said.

Prior to and since the amendment of the constitution to remove age-limits that would bar President Yoweri Museveni from standing in the next election, religious leaders have been speaking against the amendment. They have earned verbal artillery from Ofwono Opondo. President Museveni also hit at the clerics in his end of year message suggesting that they were talking about things they had no idea about.
