Three sex workers in Bukedea district who spent a dutiful night with a Covid – 19 infected truck driver, earlier this month have tested negative.
The incident of the said sex workers being traced, isolated and quarantined by Teso Covid-19 surveillance team alongside police caused community panic within the Eastern district and beyond.
On the fateful night, the three were seen merrymaking with the infected driver, before one of them spent a night on duty with him.
However, Dr. Mackay Mugerwa, a virologist at Uganda Virus Research Institute – UVRI, says some people’s bodies can naturally resist the virus.
Asked to explain, Dr. Mugerwa, confessed it was medically and scientifically difficult at the same time, to comprehend this outcome, considering how infectious coronavirus is.
According to Dr. Mugerwa; “Despite them (prostitutes) testing negative, we still require them to remain in institutional quarantine for further medical monitoring and tests.”
Back in the troubled Bukedea, led by Aloysius Okiring, residents are skeptically expressing their doubts on the country’s Covid-19 testing quality and honesty.
“Experts said it’s a highly infectious virus that spreads when you come in contact with an infected person but at the same time they want us to believe that women who had overnight sexual intercourse with a positive truck driver are testing negative,” A concerned Okiring, wondered.
