MTN Uganda scrapped charges on various categories of mobile money transactions as its contribution in efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Handling of physical cash is one of the ways the virus spreads thus the company is encouraging people to go cashless and use mobile money in its new move to scrap fees off some transactions.
The emergency transaction fees will take into effect midnight Thursday 20th March 2020 and remain in place for a period of 30 days. These include;
There will be no mobile money transaction charges for Peer to peer (P2P) MTN to MTN transaction below UGX 30,000.
There will be no charge for the wallet to bank (W2B) or bank to wallet (B2W) transactions. This is dependent on partnership with commercial banks to ensure transactions are zero rated on both subscriber and bank wallet.
There will also be no charge for all MoMo pay transactions for customers and merchants
This means MTN mobile money transaction fees across networks still stand and customers will have to pay these charges. This moves comes after Airtel Kenya also announced something similar that waves all fees on mobile money. Lets see how other telecoms like Airtel Uganda will react to this.
