Following a viral video on social media that showed abandoned children in Mubende district, the Child and Family Protection Unit (CFPU) intervened and has on Sunday, May 24 taken them to a children’s home.
According to Marion Kutuusa, the acting commissioner CFPU, the duo Annet Babirye and Fred Munyakabire have been on the run since last month for fear of being arrested over non-payment of a Shs330,000 bank loan.
They abandoned their children ages 6, 8, 11 and 14 years to their helpless elderly grandparents at Kareezi village, Kibaraga Sub-county, Kasambya county in Mubende district.
The children have since been taken to Miryante Children’s Home in Kyegegwa where they are currently being looked after following a Community Policing Strategy.
“We thank the home and its coordinator, Doreen Tiiga. We also want to thank Mubende district police leadership and the Child and Family Protection Department for a commendable work.”
According to a police statement, the children were in poor health condition.
“On April 18, IP Nanteeza Edith, the officer in charge of CFPU Mubende district, together with a team of officers from Mubende Central Police Station, moved to Kareezi village, Kibaraga Sub-county, Kasambya county in Mubende district where the children were abandoned with their very aged and helpless grandparents,” reads an excerpt.
Police said their biological parents who abandoned them will be traced and charged for child neglect.
“The team picked the children who were in a very bad state and took them to Mubende Police Clinic where they received medical attention, care and physiological counselling,” reads the statement in part.
