Covid-19: Museveni extends lockdown period by 14 days

President Museveni has extended the lockdown period for another 14 days. This lockdown period continues from Wednesday 6th May to May 19th, 2020.

He made the announcement on Monday while addressing the nation on the status of coronavirus pandemic in Uganda.

The 21-day lockdown and ban on mass gatherings that also saw the closure of most non- food shops and businesses across the country was imposed on April, and was scheduled to expire on Tuesday, May 5.

“All the other measures announced earlier will stay in place for another 14 days. Remember we can defeat the virus if we act correctly,” Museveni said.

Among a few exceptions to the lockdown extension, Museveni said whole sale shops, hardware shops, repair workshops, garages allowed, metal and wood workshops, lawyers, warehouses and restaurants (allowed to do takeaways) will reopen after Tuesday.

“We can start to open up slowly. Food markets will continue. Given the high sickness abroad, we cannot risk to open the borders. Those that were supplying hotels should look for other markets.

Agriculture will continue too.
Wholesalers have also been allowed to open but must be two meters from customers and must have face mask. There should not be air conditioning in busy business while
Hardware shops will open too.

During the lockdown, the country had restricted movement of people except for essential services such as healthcare, food shopping, water and electricity services, media and banking.

But from Wednesday, the a few other services have added on the list of essential service providers but must do it by walking, cycling or using buses.

Despite the easing of lockdown rules, schools will remain closed till further notice.
