The investigation officer for the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) food relief procurement scandal has died under unknown circumstances.
Openy David reportedly died at Nsambya Hospital where he had been rushed to save his life, according to SP Patrick Onyango the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson.
Prior to his death, Openy was investigating the theft of government relief food and the procurement scandals for the posho and beans in the OPM offices.
It should be recalled that four senior officials at OPM were arrested and handed over to the criminal investigations department by the State Houe Anti-corruption unit over alleged fraudulent practices in connection with the procurement of relief food for COVID-19 affected people. They were later released on bail despite state objection.
These include, The Permanent Secretary Ms. Christine Guwatudde Kintu, The accounting officer Joel Wanjala, The Assistant Commissioner Procurement Fred Lutimba and the Commissioner Disaster Management and Head COVID19 Relief Management Martin Owor.
According to a source, Mr. Openy’s death is related to his field of work since some top officials were not ready to be exposed.
The source adds that at one point, Mr. Openy was offered a bribe to stop the investigation or submit a false report but he declined to take the bribe.
Lt. Col Edith Nakalema the head of State House Anti-corruption unit has ordered for a swift investigation into his death.
While eulogizing his great work, Ms Nakalema revealed that she was shocked by news surrounding his mysterious and untimely death.
“My team and I are mourning one of our most dedicated and trustworthy colleague’s D/AIP David Openy. His death has shocked us.
We pray for his family as we seek answers. May His Soul Rest In Peace,” Nakalema said.
Madam Nakalema visited the grieving family members of Mr. Openy at Nsambya and assured them a quick investigation into the death of her staff.
While addressing the media, Nakalema said that she received a directive from President Yoweri Museveni to investigate the way the food program distribution.
