KAMPALA-Medical workers have demanded for a significant increase in their remuneration without which they shall go on strike. The medical workers threatened to take industrial action if their demands are not met.
On the list of their demands are for senior consultants to earn 48 million shillings per month. They also want the lowest level of service doctor to receive 6.5 million shillings per month. Besides the hefty raises demanded, they also want a 5 bedroomed house given to senior consultants and the consultants to be served by 3 domestic servants.
Meeting at Mulago hospital for their annual general meeting on Monday, the doctors say that they expect the Government to positively respond to their demands. “We play a critical role in Uganda. If the Government increased the salaries of the Judiciary, how about us in such a critical sector, that looks after every Ugandan,” one of the doctors told Monday Times.
When the judiciary went on strike, officials in the Ministry of Finance said that responding to their demands was bound to cause a similar reaction in other public service sections. Nonetheless, the government responded positively with a pay rise for judicial officials.
