Within Bbunga Kampala, various parents have found Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten the perfect educational institution for their children. Conveniently located a few metres from Shell, our visit today found that the school is well endowed with the right teachers, facilities, curriculum and environment for a child.

We spoke to the management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten, who told us a lot about the school.

Monday Times: This is our first time here, but we are spellbound by what we see. You have a wonderful school here with the right infrastructure for childhood learning. For those who have not been here, what sort of services can you say you offer to parents and children?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: We offer an educational service designed to transform the child in more ways than one. We have classes for children ranging from Daycare (the playgroup), and we have the pre-primary classes. For pre-primary we have baby class, middle class and pre-primary (which some people refer to as Top Class).

We also have a primary section, which has so far reached primary two.

Beyond these class segments, we have what we call active learning. The teaching and learning process is hands on and all children get exposed to practical experience.

We do have curricula and extra curricula activities designed to transform the child.

To give our children exposure for learning, we have trips that are thematic in nature. For example we can have a trip on transport. Such a trip includes going to the airport, going to railway stations, bus parks and so on.

We have a school farm, where we give practical exposure on farming, to our children who study with us.

We have a computer lab, where children get training in computer, and we have a well stocked library.

To enrich our students, we have bible studies as well.

Monday Times: This is impressive. So what makes you different from all the other schools that may be around?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: First of all we emphasize active learning. We are hands on with the children who study here.

We are also a christian school although it accommodates and is responsive to people of all religions and cultural backgrounds. For example we have Eritreans here, we have Sudanese and South Sudanese, and many more. This means that we insist on various values that make the child a whole and positive human being.

We also have teachers who are passionate about children, because our recruitment strategy focuses on that. We are careful to hire only those who are able to look after children enrolled here.

Our school is very safe and secure. We have a fence with barbed wire and our attendants are looking after each child every minute of the day.

Monday Times: This is something parents surely look out for. So what are your opening hours and days? This is important for those who might want to come and enroll or send their children here to study.

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: We open at 8am and close at 6pm. We are available on phone throughout the week, so that anyone can call and come over on appointment.

Monday Times: Do you have study shifts that parents can focus on?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: Our study shifts depend on the parents. The time when they would like the child to be here is when we can schedule for that child.

Monday Times: Do you have an age-limit for children enrolled here?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: Yes we do for upper age-limit, but for lower we do not have. It means that even a one day old children can be enrolled and we look after them.

Monday Times: If I want to register my child here but cannot come over here, can you send someone to where I am?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: Yes for sure. We can can do that.

Monday Times: So tell us a bit more about the various activities you have.

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: We have a library so our children can read. We also have swimming, cookery, art, beading and card making, and a reading club. We have music and dancing, farming, physical education, and a bible club.

Monday Times: This is fantastic. Do you arrange transport for children studying here?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: Yes we have transport in the form of vans. We have many vans but can add more if the need arises.

Monday Times: Great. Now back to the classroom. If a child is not performing well, how do you handle them as a school?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: Okay. First of all, we have small numbers in class. Our classes are between 5 and 15. We also have two attendants per class. This means that there is a teacher and an assistant. There is one on one learning. We do have weekly assessments of topic to see how our children are progressing. If we see someone lagging behind, the teacher has to go back and help them to catch up.

Monday Times: You mentioned some foreign students at the school. If someone came with a language difficulty, and say did not understand English, are you in position to help?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: Yes sure we are in position to help. We also help Ugandans, because there are some who come without being able to speak English.

Monday Times: This is exciting. So where are you located, for the benefit of our readers?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: We are located a few metres from Shell Bunga, on the road opposite Christ Embassy Church.

Monday Times: And what of the phone numbers that you use, which ones can be contacted for business at the moment?

Management of Early Bird Daycare and Kindergaten: 0777591197 (which is also on whatsapp). We shall be adding more numbers for the public to contact us soon.
