In a move designed to counter People Power in the capital city Kampala, President Yoweri Museveni has given billions of shillings to various groups in the city. Among those who have benefited from his cash giving spree were: taxi drivers, traders, vendors, mall operators, Owino market, Nakasero market and other supporters.
“President Museveni today toured the capital’s business district; interfacing with traders, vendors, arcade owners etc. Very lively engagements he had, plus warm reception from the crowds that gathered to receive him. Issues discussed ranged from high rent charged by landlords, high electricity tariffs, exorbitant rates for places of convenience etc. Government will fix most of these. He also appealed to the traders to venture into manufacturing, promising government support to those who take the leap. Some images here from the energetic tour” Don Wanyama Senior Presidential Press Secretary wrote about the presidents tour of Kampala, as it happened in real time.
Museveni who tends to give cash only to SACCOs, which he says are the only viable structure for distributing money that will be used meaningfully, was escorted by Minister for Kampala, Betty Namisango Kamya.
Since the birth of People Power, advanced by Kyadondo East legislator Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert, also known as Bobi Wine, anxiety has been rife in the city, as to whether President Yoweri Museveni was still in charge of the capital. The visit gave an opportunity for thousands of his supporters to come out and show their love for his government.
