Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is on tenterhooks after former party president Mugisha Muntu kicked off his nationwide consultations. The consultations seen to be the final stages towards establishing his own party, were frowned upon by the party leadership, which says Muntu did not seek clearance.
Nandala Mafabi, a top party official was critical of Muntu.
“We do not want party members who do not have discipline. Muntu as immediate party president should know the rules by now. You do not do things outside the party organs and regulations,” Mafabi said when we asked him for a comment.
Nandala Mafabi enjoys a close relationship with former FDC presidential candidate Kizza Besigye, who Muntu’s supporters accuse of fanning the flames in the party.
Muntu who has subtly spoken against extremists hijacking the party, has said that his consultations are with Ugandans in general and not limited to the FDC party membership.
“We are talking about our destiny as a country. We are not limited to a single party. Our challenges are the same, our aspirations are similar as Ugandans,” Muntu said.
After the hotly contested elections won by Patrick Amuriat, Mugisha Muntu was widely reported to be planning to form his own party. A move in this direction would shake the roots of Uganda’s largest opposition party by numbers in parliament.
