Worried about the possibility of a split in FDC, newly elected party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat has pledged to appoint Mugisha Muntu to a leadership post.

Amuriat says the party needs Muntu who has been a very good leader.

“There is no doubt that Mugisha Muntu will continue playing a critical role in the affairs of this party,” Amuriat said.

In his speech before the election which he lost, Muntu insinuated that some people in the party were backing Amuriat because they have not got over their exit from leadership. The comments were believed to be fired at Kizza Besigye, former party president, who supported Amuriat.

After the polls, Muntu supporters like Semujju Ibrahim Nganda said that they were watching to see if the party will remain focused on its objectives as opposed to fighting the supporters of Muntu. Abdu Katuntu a known Muntu supporter said that Muntu supporters would have to accept defeat because that is how democracy works.

“We cannot complain when defeated fairly and squarely. Let us remain focused and on the point,” Katuntu said.

FDC is the largest opposition party in Uganda by number of seats in parliament. It also has one of the most vibrant internal mechanisms for choosing its leaders, with aspirants engaging in nationwide campaigns.
