Gashumba granted bail

Frank Gashumba and Innocent Katamba have been granted a Shs 20Million Non cash  bail today by Buganda road chief magistrate James Mawanda Eremye.

The two have been released after bail application  that the accused were held in detention beyond the 48 hours given by the constitution.

Gashumba, 43  presented three sureties including MP Joseph Sewungu, Emmanuel Musoke (Former District chairman of Kalungu) and city businessman John Ssebaggala.

Katamba, 30 also presented three sureties that the presiding Chief Magistrate Mawanda granted them bail and ordered police to deposit the suspects’ person’s passports in court

This was in absence of the prosecutors who have been on strike since last month.

The accused were read charges of forgery, impersonation, conspiracy to commit a felony and possession of narcotic drugs.

Sheila the daughter to Gashumba posted, “My father has been taken to court after one week of not seeing a lawyer or relatives. He has been given a non cash bail.”

This follows a week after their arrest by Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) and then detention at the  Police Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Kireka.

Lt Col Deo Akiiki the assistant milliary spokesperson told a press conference last week that the accused persons had been meeting foreign companies, claiming that Ministry of Defence had outsourced them to purchase hundreds of trucks for UPDF.

“The arrest of the duo followed a whistleblower’s report to the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence about a group that was planning to fleece an investor disguising as Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs,” he said.

Gashumba is a businessman and a political critic managing Sisimuka Uganda which he says aims at “Changing Mindsets” and “Creating Self Belief.”
