Gay Kenyan author Wainana to marry Nigerian fiancé

Controversial Gay Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina has made up his mind to wed his long time Nigerian fiancé. Wainana who recently shocked fans of his works with the disclosure that he is HIV positive gave them another shock when he announced his wedding. The two will walk down the aisle or the registrars office in early 2019.

A statement on his social media page announced the wedding on May 2, 2018.

“I asked my love for his hand in marriage two weeks ago. He said yes, nearly immediately. He is Nigerian. We will be living in South Africa, where he will be studying next year. We will get married there, early next year. We will have a reception for Kenyans in Nairobi some time next year too. Nothing has surprised me more than coming to love this person, who is gentle and has the most gorgeous heart. I consider myself hugely lucky that he loves me and I have only recently fallen in love with him, but we have known each other and have been dating on and off since 2012” the statement read.

Binyavanga Wainaina says that after they have dated for five years they have come to understand each other pretty well to take the next step.

Wainana was the founding editor of a literary magazine Kwani. He was also the winner of the prestigious Caine Prize for his short story Discovering Home.
