Coronavirus infections have surpassed 4 million globally. As of Friday, the number of infections stood at 4,006,410 and 275,698 deaths while the number of recoveries stands at 1,376,229.
The United States alone has more than 1.2 million confirmed cases – five times as many as any other country.
Cases in Britain continue to escalate, as its fatalities rise above 30,000 to reach the second highest total worldwide, ahead of Italy but behind the United States. With its fifth straight day of 10,000 or more new cases, Russia sees its total rise above 150,000. In South America, Brazil now has over 110,000 cases overall, and Peru 50,000 or more cases.
Statistics compiled by Johns Hopkins University indicate that the United States has suffered 70,000 fatalities. This amounts to 27.7% of the global total. It also has more than 1.2 million cases, or 32.8% of the total worldwide.
Uganda’s cases still stand at 101 confirmed cases, 23 active cases with 55 recoveries and no deaths. The ministry of Health broke the norm and made no daily updates about tested samples on Friday. Out of the confirmed cases, 41 are from truck drivers – 37 foreign and 4 Ugandans. 23 of the foreign truck drivers have returned to their respective countries.
There were a total 59 new coronavirus deaths and new 3,085 infections in Africa on Friday. Kenya’s cases increased by 14 new cases to 621 confirmed cases. After more than a week of no coronavirus updates, Tanzania’s ministry of Health promised to start releasing updates more regularly, saying changes had been made at the national testing laboratory.
President John Pombe Magufuli recently accused the National Influenza Laboratory in Dar es Saalam of doctoring COVID-19 results after they declared samples of birds, sheep, goat, pawpaw, jackfruit as containing coronavirus.
Rwanda’s cases rose by 2 to 274 on Friday while South Sudan’s case rose by 16 new cases to 90. In Sudan, 7 more people succumbed to the virus to raise its total deaths to 59. Its total infections increased by 181 to 1,111 confirmed cases.
In South Africa, there were 663 new infections and 17 new deaths. South Africa now has a total of 8,895 total infections and 178 deaths while some 3,153 people have recovered from the virus.
Egypt recorded 21 more deaths and 495 new cases. To date, Egypt has 8476 confirmed cases and 503 deaths while 1945 have recovered from the virus.
Ghana registered 921 new cases on Friday to take its national tally to 4,012 cases. The western African country has had 323 recoveries and 18 deaths.
Guinea registered 82 new infections, Senegal 59 new case, Djibouti had 2 new cases while DR Congo registered 34 new cases. In Niger there 14 new infections and 2 new deaths. Niger’s total infections stand at 795.
Benin had 102 new cases, Liberia 10 new cases, Ethiopia 3 new cases. Sao Tome and Principe had 21 new cases and one new death. Sierra Leone also had one new death and 26 new cases while in Benin there were 102 new infections.
