Honey Bears Pre-School is an excellent pre-primary educational facility located in Bukoto Kampala. The school offers a variety of levels and phases for children between two and five years. It carries several extra curricula activities that transform the child into a unique and well-endowed child.
We visited the school today and spoke to Madam Doreen Kalimuzo, the director, who told us about their work and service to parents and children.
Monday Times: Good morning Madam Doreen Kalimuzo. We are excited to visit your wonderful school. We have seen a lot here but wanted to also know what you offer to parents and children in terms of service.
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We are a service oriented pre-primary school. We have different levels namely: Reception Class, which is from two and a half year olds to three year olds. We then have Nursery One class, which is three year olds, Nursery Two class which is three and a half year olds, and then Kindergaten, which is four year olds. The last level is the Pre-Primary Class.
Monday Times: Interesting. So what do we have in all these classes?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: Well in Reception Class, this is the play group. Here we focus on them learning through songs, games as tools of education. They rest in the afternoon for two.
In Nursery One they also play a bit but they are in more advanced activities. They start to learn French and are introduced to more activities. In Nursery Two, we have the same activities and also a little bit more advanced than Nursery One. They start learning with sounds, numbers, songs and stories. In Kindergarten, the children start reading and writing.
Monday Times: This is nice. What extra curricular activities do you have at Honey Bears Pre-School?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We have swimming, ballet, sports (in first term), we have trips (in second term) and concerts (in third term). We base our activities around themes for example environment, health, culture and more. We also introduce our children to music and piano.
Monday Times: How different are you from others who might offer pre-primary educational services?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We have a wide variety of things we offer to the child and the parent as evidenced from what we have just talked. We aim to nurture a confident, independent thinking child which gives great value to the child and the parent.
We also give very good and nutritious meals of a balanced diet.
Monday Times: So what times of the day do you open and close?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We work for most hours a day until at least 7.30pm. This is because we have two teachers that reside at the premises because we have children coming in late or early. We do not charge late fee because we understand our parents.
Monday Times: If I want to register my child from afar, is that possible?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: Yes it is. But we prefer the parents, especially the mothers do come over to the school so that they get to see the learning environment of their children.
Monday Times: How are your prices like?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: Our prices are reasonable and are commensurate with the services we offer.
Monday Times: Now there is one thing we also wanted to know. If my child is not performing well in school, how do you handle it to my satisfaction as a parent?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We ensure that we first interface with the parent. We talk to the parent to establish what could be going on in the lives of the child. We maintain a triangle of Teacher-Parent-Child. This helps us to come up with remedies to address the child’s performance.
Monday Times: Where are you located, in case I am looking for the school?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We are in Bukoto a few metres from Bemuga. When you reach Bemuga you can call us.
Monday Times: Okay. Then what phone numbers do you use for business?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We use 0772571778 or 0776613678
Monday Times: Great. What email address do you normally use?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: We use doreenkalimuzo@gmail.com
Monday Times: What is your Facebook page?
Madam Doreen Kalimuzo: It is Honey Bears Pre-School.
