Lieutenant General (Retired) Henry Tumukunde, the latest entrant in the race to become president of Uganda has asked members of the political opposition not to judge him but accept him as one of their own, like he has always been. Speaking on the Capital Gang Show hosted by Oscar Semweya Musoke this morning, Tumukunde says he has a history of opposing President Museveni when he feels that he is wrong.

“My record is there for all to see. I have been opposing what I think is wrong with President Museveni’s government for as long as I remember. I even opposed the amendment of term limits, something which caused me trouble,” Tumukunde said.

Faced with a barrage of criticism from panelist Ibrahim Semujju Nganda, Tumukunde said that the trend of people looking to the past of others instead of accepting them, would affect the struggle to dislodge President Museveni.

Taken as largely elitist, Tumukunde faces a big challenge of convincing Ugandans and the opposition stakeholders that he is not here to take them for a ride. He is widely believed to belong to President Museveni’s inner circle.
