The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has directed Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda to explain police crackdown on the opposition.

She asked, “Why is the police is not allowing Members of Parliament to consult and hold meetings with their constituents?”

It is here that the Speaker asked the premier to prepare a statement to Parliament not later than next week.

During a plenary on Wednesday in Parliament, Kadaga said; “I am wondering if we are going to have elections next year. Why is the Police not allowing Members of Parliament to consult and hold meetings in their constituents?”

The Speaker said Police are mandated to keep law and order but not to decide who should hold a meeting. She directed the Minister of Internal Affairs Gen Jeje Odongo to appear before the August House tomorrow, to explanation the matter raised.

This week, Bobi Wine was once again at loggerheads with Police as they blocked his meeting at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Ndeeba. Police said his meetings were illegal since he had not fulfilled all the requirements.

In another scenario, Police are clashing with FDC strongman Dr Kizza Besigye two days in a row in Jinja and Bugiri dispersing his meetings.

The house also learnt that police also stopped a thanksgiving function of the father of Kasanda North MP Patrick Nsamba on grounds that fellow MPs were not allowed to attend.
