Joe Malaika is an impressive fashion and design store located in Kabalagala Kampala Uganda. It is owned by Joe. We took a visit to its store at Kingsgate Mall in the area, and talked to its management about their services.
Before we did the interview we have a conversation with Joe Malaika who lives and works in the United States about how he got to the point of owning a mega fashion design store.From our conversations with him, we found out that Joe Malaika, born in Kampala, Uganda, grew up in Boston MA, became Boston’s top fashion designer. As a winner of Casual Designer of 2015, in the following year, he was a recipient of 2016 of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from the House of Representative. Joe Malaika’s brand is now sold at Lit Boutique’s stores nationwide and his official site www.joemalaika.com. as well as Kingsgate mall Kabalaga (Uganda).
Joe Malaika collaborated with national brand such as Banana Republic, Zara, and Sephora. At his annual fashion shows at Hilton hotel, Joe Malaika raised funds for Jimmy Fund. Joe Malaika’s stated goal is to see Joe Malaika brand at the national stores such as Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.
As a child growing up, Joe Malaika watched his grandmother sewing colorful dresses for the women in her life. By watching her, he always knew that he would be a designer and sew clothes. His dream did not come to realization until, one day; he made a dress for a girl. Her friends became almost obsessed with that dress, where Joe Malaika, subsequently, started receiving requests from girls to make dresses for them. His talent earned him a spot in the 2017 Dubai Fashion Week.
We then moved to the interview of his management team at the store in Kampala.
Our questions were as follows:
Monday Times: What exactly does Joe Malaika do?
Joe Malaika Management: We are mainly a fashion design store designing and then selling an array of fashion products for those who appreciate modern and elegant fashion. We have garments for women and men and we do carry a lot of things under this umbrella. We have casual wear, formal wear, shoes, bags, jewelry, bridal gowns and changing dresses and several other items.
At our store you can find Men’s coats and full suits, dresses for women, skirt tops, jump suits, wrompers, shoes for men, clutches/bags for women and many more.
Monday Times: What makes you different from other stores that deal in this kind of fashion?
Joe Malaika Management: Our boss Joe is a fashion guru. He structured the store in such a way that we attract the best in fashion, and satisfy our clientele. We make/tailor the clothes by ourselves and sell high quality garments, shoes and bags. We do have the latest types of items and they are long lasting.
Our garments are tailor made in Boston and exported from our design facility there.
Our slogan is ‘Experience the Fabric’. It tells it all about what we intend for our customers.
Our customer care is good. When you visit us, you automatically become our King and Queen. We also have very nice prices. What we sell is affordable and everyone can find something to buy.
Monday Times: What are your working hours and days?
Joe Malaika Management: We work Monday to Sunday from 9am to 9pm. On Sunday we work from 10am to 8pm.
Monday Times: How are your prices like?
Joe Malaika Management: Very affordable for our customers. Sometimes we negotiate but they range from UShs 150,000 to UShs 500,000. Full suits go for UShs 500,000 and above.
Monday Times: Do you do delivery to clients?
Joe Malaika Management: Yes we do delivery but we tend to want customers to come here because of the challenges of getting the right size of what they want. Also they could see something else that they could need.
Monday Times: What should your clients know before coming to the shop?
Joe Malaika Management: They should know that we have good customer care, good prices, and quality clothes like no one else.
