Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga yesterday kept MPs guessing by leaving the age-limit issue out of the order paper.

Various MPs had expected that the matter would be tabled to begin the long process of amending the constitution.

MPs opposed to the amendment were seen dressed in red, in anticipation of what they called another “struggle to protect the constitution.”

The heavy deployment of police in the city was viewed as an indication that the bill would be tabled for second reading.

Ruth Nankabirwa, the NRM Chief Whip says there is no need for panic.

“The Speaker can introduce the bill whenever she feels like. What we are certain about is that it should be passed before Christmas. We do not want to delay important matters of constitutional significance to Ugandans,” Nankabirwa told this newspaper.

She also denied that MPs had each been given UShs 200,000,000 (Two Hundred Million) to pass the bill.

“Those are speculators from the opposing side, who are finding excuses for losing the battle. We love our country more than money and they should know that,” Nankabirwa added.

Reports from parliament also say NRM MPs have rejected the restoration of term limits.
