Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is taking her crusade against homosexuality in Uganda to another level after telling of a delegation from the United Nations that gay rights are not a priority in Uganda.

“Our priority is not gays our priority is food not sex,” Kadaga said.

For a while Kadaga has been speaking against homosexuality in Uganda. She recently threatened to pull out of the World Parliamentary Union if issues of gay rights were smuggled on to their discussions without informing the Asian and African groups in advance. The move forced officials to remove any planned discussions on gay rights off the order paper, at least for the period of the meeting where the rift emerged.

Her stance however has drawn criticism from within and outside Uganda. Some observers say she is supposed to be a speaker of Parliament for different groups, whether minorities or majorities. Her attacks on gays are a sign of attacking minorities, which she vehemently denies.

Uganda’s position on gay rights has received global bashing with some countries threatening to cut aid to the country over the position on gays.
