Despite a number of measures put in place to manage the threat of foreign cargo drivers frustrating the fight against coronavirus, Uganda continues to register Covid-19 cases mainly involving truck drivers from neighbouring countries.

On Thursday, Uganda’s coronavirus cases jumped from 139 to 160 as a result of truck drivers.

As a result, the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has called upon government to either stop the movement of these truck drivers or lift the lockdown, instead of letting poor Ugandans suffer inside their houses.

While speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Kadaga told the House that Ugandans are concerned about government’s decision to continue keeping them locked inside their houses yet they are not infected, while the same government allows truck drivers, many of who are infected with COVID-19, to continue moving freely around the country.

“It is disturbing to note that the bulk of the new #COVID-19 cases are from truck drivers. Ugandan locked in their homes are not moving, but truck drivers who are testing positive are going about normal life. Ugandans are concerned about this and I am concerned too,” Speaker Kadaga told Parliament.

According to information from the Ministry, the cumulative number of recovered patients is sixty-three (63) out of the 160 (40%) confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Uganda.

93% (149/160) are imported cases, 5% (8/160) are local cases while 2% (3/160) have an unknown chain of transmission

The Cumulative number of foreign truck drivers who have tested positive for COVID-19 in Uganda is 80. Of these, 42.5% (34/80) truck drivers have returned to their respective countries.

  1. Truck drivers positive in Uganda but negative in in their countries should not bother Uganda. Let’s act according to our evidence instead of subordinating to doubtiful foreign results. Leave that validation to WHO. Repartriate all positives, MUST quarantine all foreign negatives for 2-3 weeks. Slowly release the lock down start with low populance density economic but essential activities.

  2. It is too much of us keeping in doors while others countries who Don’t care about their help are bringing problem, it is now nothing for us to wash hand we done the needful buh all in vain the lockdown should be lifted Ugandans are dying for other countries cases are being imported

  3. Keep the national boarders closed and release the quarantine, for people internally to move and work while following other ministry of health guidelines and SPO

  4. Is it possible to test all school going children before opening for next term or fo candidate students. As parents we are concerned for our children. Lastly how do we cater for the Borders vs day students as per sops.
