Inspector General of Police (IGP) General Kale Kayihura has responded to claims by a local newspaper that his guards had been replaced by the military. The paper insinuated that Kayihura could be under arrest or could be under protection against potential attacks. This comes after a sweep of arrests of senior police officers took place last week.

A statement issued by the IGP which was not written on official letter head states

PRESS STATEMENT

I have restrained myself from responding to what is trending on social media and some sections of the print and online media relating to the Uganda Police, and myself.

However, am compelled to respond to a story full of falsehoods that appeared as a headline story in SATURDAY VISION of 28th October 2017, entitled ‘KAYIHURA SECURITY BEEFED UP’.

This is to inform the public that the story is false. I have not changed my security detail as reported. Am guarded by Police guards, and not the army. Access to my home is as free as it has always been. My neighborhood is as quiet, with free access as it has always been. Even the ongoing repairs on part of the access road that passes my residence, initiated by members of the community, has not made it less accessible.

There is no question that whoever is behind these stories is motivated by malice with sinister motives. Recall that a few months back, social media and main media were awash with fabricated stories that I had been “mysteriously taken ill”, with some saying that I was in fact dead. There is no doubt that the same evil elements are at it again.

Let me assure members of the public that I am safe and well, going about my duties, normally. There should, therefore, be no cause for alarm on account of the false stories in the media.”

A few months ago, several newspapers online and in print alleged that Kale Kayihura had been taken for medical treatment. One newspaper claimed that he had died. The reports turned out to be false.
