More than 200 veterans who fought rebel leader, Alice Lakwena, stormed the Luuka District headquarters accusing their leaders of allegedly misappropriating Shs1 billion.

The group, under their umbrella, Luuka District Lakwena Victims Association, camped at the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Nsubuga Byewayo and vowed not to leave until their problem is solved.

The victims accused their leaders led by Musa Kintu of misappropriating the funds.

Shs1b was reportedly disbursed last month by government as a token of appreciation and meant to be shared among the members.

The association accused their leaders of giving out money to ghost beneficiaries, their relatives, friends and in-laws.

They told the  RDC  that when the funds were disbursed, “they (leaders) reported to banks that most of the victims had died and subsequently replaced their names with their non-existent relatives who took the money.”

Byewayo  pledged to fellow up the matter and urged them to remain calm.

“Those who misappropriated the funds will be dealt with,” said RDC.

Alice Lakwena duped her followers that she possessed magical powers that could turn the bullets against them into water and they perished in huge numbers at the frontline.

In August 1986, Alice Auma, a young Acholi woman in northern Uganda, proclaiming herself under the orders of a Christian spirit named Lakwena, raised an army called the “Holy Spirit Mobile Forces.”

With it, she waged a war against perceived evil, not only on external enemy represented by the National Resistance Army government, but also internal enemies in the form of “impure” soldiers, witches, and sorcerers.

She came very close to her goal of overthrowing the government but was defeated and fled to Kenya.
