Lindaville Daycare and Nursery School Kampala is a modern, well equipped and good pre-school institution in Uganda, that caters for the needs of the early child. It is owned by Madam Sarah, who is a professional trained early childhood educator.
Today we visited the pre-school and met with her. She told us a lot about the school and we were impressed by what we saw and heard.
Monday Times: Good morning Madam Sarah. Tell us a bit about what you have at Lindaville Daycare and Nursery School.
Madam Sarah: Thank you for your visit. We are a daycare and pre-primary school. Pre-primary means we have baby class, middle class and top class.
We have normal classroom teaching, for example how to read, how to write, and how to count. We also have painting and molding.
At the school, we do have games, music activities where children participate in singing and dancing and other entertainment sessions such as watching television with cartoons.
To expose our children, we organize trips like to the airport, to the zoo and play centres.
Some of the highlights of our work include celebrating children’s birthdays at the school.
We have a sports gala, we have open day where we invite parents and well-wishers to visit the school.
At the school, the children graduate when they have completed top class.
Monday Times: Okay, this is impressive. What do you believe is special about Lindaville Daycare and Nursery School, which other schools might not have?
Madam Sarah: We are God fearing and instill positive religious values in the children who go through our hands. Bearing in mind that the world has changed, we are careful to impart values that will transform the child in this fast changing environment.
We also pay great attention to the care of the child. The children who come here get an experience which is as if they are at home. They feel at home because we handle them exceptionally well. Our curriculum fuses the local and international curriculum. I am a trained teacher of early childhood education so I have been able to introduce some of the things I learnt in training to the school.
Monday Times: Let us elaborate more about you being God fearing. How is this reflected in day to day activities of the school?
Madam Sarah: We have a religious class every Friday and children are told about religious values. We also read the bible during assembly in the morning and inspire the child to adopt biblical teachings. Every teacher is expected to participate in this. We show the child how to adopt biblical teachings in their daily lives.
Monday Times: Great. What time are the children expected at school and what time are they expected to leave?
Madam Sarah: This greatly depends on the parent. But we open our gate at 6am and receive the children up to 8am. Then they are picked between 3 and 4pm.
Monday Times: How are the terms at the school structured?
Madam Sarah: We follow the normal school calendar. Our terms are three months, but we always have a three day break during the term, for the children to rest. We have the rest day after the open day. When you give the children time to rest, they come back fresh and ready to proceed.
Monday Times: What do you do during open days?
Madam Sarah: It is the day when we talk to parents about their children. The first thing they do when they come here is to go to class and talk to the teacher about their child. Then they can see the different other activities we have.
Monday Times: In your view, what are the current issues of raising children in this age?
Madam Sarah: Well parents are too busy and so have very little time for the child. They usually leave the child in the hands of the maid, who if someone is unlucky, maybe have bad behavior and come from very different and sometimes unpleasant backgrounds. That will impact on the child.
We also have the problem of television. Children are watching what they are not supposed to be watching. They are being influenced by what they see on television.
Monday Times: Okay. So does Lindaville Daycare and Nursery School provide transport for children?
Madam Sarah: Yes it does. We can organize transport at a fee. We charge according to the distance from which we pick and drop the child.
Monday Times: This is good. There are some parents who might not have time to come up to the school for registration. Are you able to cater for them somehow?
Madam Sarah: Yes we can send to them registration forms. But preferably it would be good if the parents came to the school itself to see where their child is going to be.
Monday Times: How are your fees like?
Madam Sarah: Our fees are very affordable and cover the services that we offer, because we have half day and full day.
Monday Times: If a parent wants their child to be in boarding, do you provide such accommodation?
Madam Sarah: Sure we do. We can discuss with them and see.
Monday Times: How do you handle a child who is exceptionally bright in class?
Madam Sarah: We handle our children according to their capacity. You cannot ignore a brilliant child. You cannot leave them behind because they are brilliant. You give them more work so that they are not bored. He or she wants to go to another step, so you should have work to ensure that they can match this.
Monday Times: Where is Lindaville found?
Madam Sarah: We are found behind American Embassy in Nsambya. You use the Kirombe Road and cross over to Gogoonya bypass.
Monday Times: What are the phone numbers for business?
Madam Sarah: We use 0782394926 or 0704611949 (this is also on whatsapp).
