Makerere University has sacked Dr.Stella Nyanzi and 44 other lecturers, according to information filtering through from the office of the Vice Chancellor. Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice Chancellor confirmed the decision which he linked to disciplinary issues include sexual harassment, failure to deliver marks on time, absconding from work and insubordination.
“Many of those fired had left the University and now working in other universities outside Makerere, while others were undisciplined. They were tarnishing the name of the University and we could not tolerate that. I am sure that those people were given a fair hearing to defend themselves before the appointment board so everything was done legally,” Prof Nawangwe told a local newspaper.
Among the dismissed lecturers are Dr Stella Nyanzi, Dr Swizen Kyomuhendo (of the School of Social Sciences), Harriet Namukwaya Kabunga (of the department of European & Oriental Languages), Dr Catherine Namono (of the department of Painting and Art History), Dr Irene Bet Kizza (of the School of Medicine), Dorothy Kwagala (of the School of Law), Aggrey Mwesigye (of the department of Mechanical Engineering), Dr Silas Oluka (of Science & Technical Education), Ms Eiman Elwidaa (of the department of Architecture & Physical Planning).
Others on the list are Dr. Haroon Sseguya (of the department of Agricultural Extension and Innovation), Grace Nabulo (of the department of Botany), Olive Darlia Buhule (in the department of Statistics & Actuarial Sciences), Stella Maris Sendagi (of Agricultural & Bio systems Engineering), James Semuwemba (of the department of Civil & Environmental Engineering), Sarah Alobo (of the department of Agribusiness & Natural Resource Economics), Joseph Derrick Olaka, (in the department of Computer Science), Jude Olinga (of the department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics) and Dr Gilbert Wathum (of Forestry; Biodiversity & Tourism).
