Professor Mahmood Mamdani, Uganda’s leading global scholar, has been appointed the Chancellor of Kampala International University (KIU). A press release from KIU, issued today details the profile of the towering academic, whose name resonates across global capitals.

Mamdani who obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Harvard University in 1974, has had a stellar academic career since the 1970s. He is currently a Professor of Government at the prestigious Ivy League Columbia University in New York. He also serves as the Director of Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) at Makerere University Uganda.
The appointment comes at a time when KIU is cementing its lead over and above all other privately owned universities in Uganda. As Chancellor, Mamdani will be at the helm of the university’s public image. KIU is expected to receive stewardship from a man whose reach and profile cuts across the world.
His lofty stature among international donors for research projects could bolster KIU’s own agenda to transform into Africa’s leading research University.
Mamdani who has published widely and given ground breaking presentations over the years, has previously been a President of The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESSRIA). He was the founding Executive Director of the Centre for Basic Research (CBR) in Uganda, and served as Professor at University of Cape Town, which recently accorded him an honorary doctorate.
