Manchester United could land Bruno Fernandes in a £55million deal by the end of the week after a breakthrough in talks with Sporting Lisbon.

According to the Daily Mirror, the transfer is set to go ahead after United finally reached a breakthrough in talks with Sporting Lisbon.

United’s bid to sign Fernandes hit a wall at the weekend, with both clubs far apart in terms of their valuation of the free-scoring 25-year-old midfielder.

But there is understood to have been progress between the two clubs, with the loss of Marcus Rashford having accelerated United’s need to get the deal done this month.

Rashford is out for at least three months, which has intensified United’s need for a goalscoring attacker, with Portugal international Fernandes seen as that player.

United are understood to have bid around £40m for Fernandes, which was dismissed by Sporting, but are ready to return with a bid of £46.78m, which could rise to £55m with add-ons.

Sporting were holding out for close to £60m for their captain and most influential player – an initial £51m plus £8.5m in add-ons – but a compromise figure now looks likely to be reached, according to sources in Portugal.

Bruno Fernandes seemingly snubbed the chance to say goodbye to Sporting Lisbon fans ahead of his expected move to Manchester United as he angrily stormed down the tunnel and pushed a TV camera on Tuesday night.

The Portuguese midfielder was left furious after Sporting’s 2-1 defeat by Braga in the semi-finals of the Taca da Liga – the Portuguese League Cup – in what could be his final game for the club as he edges closer to Old Trafford.

Fernandes provided an assist for his side’s only goal of the game but a late Braga winner prompted an angry reaction from the 25-year-old.
