As Uganda marks World AIDS Day, the Western district of Mbarara has registered the most unusual trends in HIV infections this year, sources at the Uganda AIDS Commission say.

In a report released before World AIDS Day today, 31% of females in Mbarara have HIV while 9% of males have HIV.

The gender imbalance is not only one thing to worry about but the fact that these figures are way above the national average makes it more worrying.

Peter Rusoke an anti-HIV/AIDS activist says that Mbarara is a very porous town with different kinds of people traversing through it on a daily basis.

“It is a gateway to different parts of the country and East Africa. It is also growing rapidly as an urban centre yet there are still cultural practices that fan HIV/AIDS” Rusoke said.

In 2015, health authorities noted that Mbarara was registering 350 new HIV infections daily. The worst affected areas were Kakoba, Nyeihanga and Ndeija.
