Lwemiyaga County Member of Parliament, Hon Theodore Ssekikubo, has been granted bail by Masaka Chief Magistrates Court.
Mr Ssekikubo was granted bail on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, by Masaka Magistrate’s Court after the State failed to adduce court records regarding his alleged skipping of bail in 2010.
However, Ssekikubo’s release was overshadowed by police firing teargas to prevent his jubilant supports carrying the MP through Masaka town.
Ssekikubo’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, asked for the lawmaker to be released on bail again.
He presented sureties including; Babirye Kabanda (Masaka District Woman MP), Hanifer Kawooya (Sembabule District Woman MP), Barnabas Tinkasimire (MP Buyaga West), Florence Namayanja (MP Bukoto East) and Johnson Kamugusha, the Lwemiyaga Sub county district councillor.
On Monday, State Attorney Aminah Akasa, had asked court not grant Ssekikubo bail saying he doesn’t respect court orders citing a 2010 case where the MP jumped bail.
This morning, the state failed to adduce court records regarding his alleged skipping of bail in 2010. He was thus granted bail.
Ssekikubo was arrested on Friday for allegedly inciting people to forcefully enter Lwemiyaga Market and sell their cows when the area had been closed by police for quarantine.
He was Monday charged with unlawful possession of fire arms, engaging in acts calculated to cause death and inciting violence and causing physical injuries to voters [as well as destruction of party-NRM- property].
He is further charged with obstructing Stephen Okwi Okedi; the Sembabule District Police commander and his junior, Idi Kigenyi, who were on duty.
Prosecution states that the MP, while armed, threatened Emmanuel Ssekimpi, then NRM returning officer in Sembabule District, with violence.
The offences were committed during the ruling NRM party primaries in 2010 when Ssekikubo was contesting against Patrick Nkalubo.
