Health minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng says Mulago Hospital has Wednesday discharged four patients who have fully recovered.

According to Aceng, these tested negative twice for COVID-19 and have been discharged.

They were part of the 23 patients that the hospital has been managing with officials saying they might discharge another 6 patients tomorrow pending their results from the Uganda Virus Research Institute today.

That makes Uganda’s total coronavirus recoveries 12 after Adjumani hospital discharged its single patient and Entebbe Grade B hospital discharged 7 patients a few days ago.

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Uganda still stand at 55 with no confirmed deaths. Government, on Sunday, started tracing and testing all the 13,000 travelers who entered the country between March 7 and March 21 when the country confirmed its first coronavirus case.

Although there is no known treatment for coronavirus, Dr Henry Mwebase, the director-general Health Services at ministry of Health recently said patients in Uganda are put on malaria treatment of hydroxychloroquine and erythromycin an anti-biotic.

These drugs are still under study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) awaiting approval and clearance to be used golobally. Nearly all the patients who recover rely on their natural immunity and the ability to fight off the virus. Patients with underlying health conditions such as HIV, TB, pneumonia etc have weakened immunity and are the most prone and vulnerable to COVID-19.

Yesterday President Museveni extended all the country’s anti-coronavirus measures including the lockdown and curfew by at least 21 more days.
