President Yoweri Museveni has given working machines to the first batch of graduands under his initiative- skilling girl child project at Kololo Independence Grounds.

The president congratulated the girls upon the commencement  and provided them with tools, for use in their respective vocations.

“The initiative seeks to fight unemployment among urban girls. Each graduand has received a working machine in line with skills acquired,” said  President Museveni.

The girls identified from the five divisions of Kampala , have been having hands-on training at no cost for the last 6 months.

Over 661 female pioneers  acquired skills in catering, knitting, tailoring, weaving, shoe making and bakery among others.

The president said that the girls are a nucleus of government’s efforts to skill the youth with job-creating skills and be a foundation for cottage industries and a hub for import substitution.

“This Skilling Girl Child program will be gradually extended to other parts of the country. Leaders should support it,” he added.

This project started six months ago by the President to fight against poverty and unemployment among the girl child group in the country, and on Monday the project put out its first graduands.

The event was attended by KCCA minister Betty Kamya, Youth minister Florence Nakiwala and minister for Microfinance, Haruna Kasolo among others, first toured the exhibition stalls for the new graduates who had already demonstrated proficiency in knitting, carpentry, tailoring and others.
