Museveni to address nation on Labour Day

President Yoweri Museveni will on Friday, May 1 deliver a televised address as the world celebrates Labour Day.

“H.E Kaguta Museveni will address the Nation on the occasion of this years’ International Labour Day LabourDay May 1st via live broadcast. Please tune in to all national Televisions and Radios,” Ms. Lindah Nabusayi, his press secretary said via Twitter.

According to Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, the acting Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission, the address will start at 11:00 am.

Broadcasters have been told to relay the Presidential address live.

“A feed will be available from the National Public Broadcaster – Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), to facilitate you in this,” Sewankambo told media.

Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Frank Tumwebaze last week announced that Ministry of Labour will not organise International labour day celebrations earlier planned to take place in Mbarara Western Uganda due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am writing to notify all workers and fellow citizens that due to the social disruptions caused by the COVID19 pandemic and in pursuit of the national coronavirus prevention guidelines in place, Ministry of Labour will not organise International labour day celebrations on 1st May 2020, earlier planned to take place in Mbarara,” Mr. Tumwebaze wrote.

The theme of this year’s event will be; Improved Access to Financial Services for Employment Creation.

International Labour Day, also known as Workers’ Day or Labour Day in some countries is a celebration of laborers and the working class that is promoted by the international labor movement which occurs every year on May 1, an ancient European spring festival.
