President Yoweri Museveni will this coming week begin meeting NRM MPs who opposed the age-limit amendment in parliament. The purpose of the meeting is to build party cohesion, sources familiar with its organization say.
In an unprecedented move, several MPs were opposed to the amendment which caused unease in the party.
“the president is going to meet each MP under the auspices of the party. He is not meeting them on a personal basis, but as a chairperson of the party. He would like to know why they went against the decisions of the party,” an NRM official told this newspaper.
Two NRM MPs abstained from voting for any side. They were Mukitale Stephen (Bulisa County) and Pius Wakabi (Bugahya County).
Those who rejected the party position were; James Acidri (Maracha East), Muyanja Ssenyonga (Mukono South), Moses Adome (Jie County), Ajilo Maria Goretti (Kaberamaido Woman MP), Silvia Akello (Otuke Woman MP), Justine Khainza (Bududa Woman MP), Geoffrey Macho (Busia Municipality), Robert Migadde (Buvuma Islands), John Baptist Nambeshe (Manjiya County), and Silvia Akello (Otuke Woman MP).
The list also includes Bigirwa Nyendwoha (Buliisa Woman MP), Evelyn Chemutai (Bukwo Woman MP), Richard Gafabusa (Bwamba County), James Niringiyimana (Kinkizi West), Patrick Nsamba (Kasanda North),Alex Ruhunda (Fort Portal Municipality), Sylvia Rwabwogo (Kabarole Woman MP), Denis Sabiiti (Rubanda West) and Helen Kahunde (Kiryandongo Woman MP).
According to the party official, Felix Okot Ogong (Dokolo South), Connie Nakayenze (Mbale Woman MP), Mbwatekamwa Gaffa (Kasambya), Sam Lyomoki (Workers), Lowila Oketayot (Pader Woman MP), Barnabas Tinkansiimire (Buyaga), Henry Kibalya (Bugabula South), Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga County), Sarah Nakawunde (Mpigi Woman MP),Monicah Amoding (Kumi Woman MP), Susan Amero (Amuria Woman), Michael Timuzigu (Kajara County), and Anthony Ssemuli (Mubende Municipality) shall also meet the president.
