Hiphop star Navio (also known as Daniel Kigozi) is a budding entrepreneur who takes his business seriously. News reaching Monday Times indicates that the ‘nawuliranga’ rapper has been visiting the Uganda Communications Commission to acquire a radio frequency to kickstart his business. UCC no longer grants licenses for Kampala. It has thus asked Navio to look for someone who might have abandoned their dream of running their radio station.
Kampala has over 79 radio stations, with most of them struggling to stay in business.
Unlike many artistes in Uganda,Navio is reportedly good at managing his finances, having used his earnings and savings to buy several apartments in Kampala.
A radio station on sale in Kampala goes for Uganda Shillings 1.2 billion.
When we spoke to the management of Navcorp, Navio’s business firm, they did not confirm or deny the reports. An official said “anything is possible in the world of business.”
If Navio acquires a radio station, he will be the second musician after Peter Sematimba to own a radio station. Sematimba who made his mark in the 1990s as a singer, songwriter and producer and later radio presenter owns Super FM.
Navio has been successful as a hiphop artiste in spite of the barriers faced by artistes in the genre.
