Singer Eddy Kenzo has been named as Uganda’s biggest artiste of the last decade, a research carried out by Opinion Matters has revealed.

Opinion Matters describes itself as a Kenyan market research organization with branches in Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

In the survey in which field assistants interviewed 8,000 Ugandans in each of the 112 districts of the country, Kenzo was suggested for winning the Black Entertainment Television (BET) award in 2015.The accolade “the ‘Viewer’s Choice Best New International Artist’” was the first major international music award for Uganda.

Kenzo’s astronomical success then took off after that with numerous international concerts, collaborations and awards. He was also named as a brand ambassador for Kenya.

Grace Magezi, the research director was quick to issue a disclaimer about the findings.

“The survey asked among other questions, one simple question: who do you think has been the biggest Ugandan artiste in the last ten years. 49% of the respondents said it was Kenzo, while 12% said it was Bebe Cool, 9% said Chameleone and others were listed. When asked why they thought Kenzo was the biggest, most said his BET award set him apart from the rest,” Magezi said.

The research results could stir controversy as each musician in Uganda believes that they are the biggest. Indeed many musicians have done well according to the survey results.

In the other top artistes listed in the research findings, Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool, Bobi Wine, David Lutalo, Sheeba Karungi, Juliana Kanyomozi, Iryn Namubiru, Maureen Nantume and Haruna Mubiru feature strongly.
