The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has reportedly endorsed its vice chairperson in Kampala Godfrey Nyakana to unseat Erias Lukwago from the Mayoral seat in 2021.

Nyakana unveiled this during a meeting with the NRM youth on Thursday December 27, and asked them to slowly start mobilizing the numbers to rally behind him.

Political observers however think Kampala is too hot a seat for NRM to swiftly take over.

Siraji Nsanga a political science lecturer of Kampala University, says Nyakana and NRM have more work to do if they want to unseat Lukwago or another opposition politician for that matter. One of their tasks is to settle the disputes between the land lords and tenants in the city.

“Kampala has been dominated by opposition people for long. It will take a lot of work to remove them, because the city like many urban centres in Africa tends to be disenchanted with government due to high costs of living,” Nsanga said.

Lydia Wanyoto the chairperson NRM women league, a member of the NRM expresses confidence that Nyakana will make it through due to the massive support their party has managed to grow in the recent two years.

Reacting to the news about Nyakana, Erias Lukwago the current Lord Mayor says Nyakana is day dreaming because he does not have any support behind him.

“The party chairman of NRM, President Yoweri Museveni is not with them, he actually dropped them longtime ago that is why he has the likes of Betty Kamya holding offices yet they are not from NRM,” Lukwago said.
